My New Hunter Pet

Vargul BlighthoundI’ve traditionally used Cats as my Hunter pet of choice. This goes all the way back to my taming of the pet I exclusively used until the release of Wrath: Humar the Pridelord. After my brief fling with the Beast Mastery tree during my leveling to 80, I went back to Cats for DPS purposes once I started running Heroics and the occasional Raid as a Marksman.

Well, I recently made the switch from Cats to Wolves thanks to Furious Howl. The only problem I had was finding a decent looking Wolf to tame. The generic ones in the game just don’t do it for me and I’m not even that into the Shattered Hand Warhounds inside Hellfire Ramparts.

In the end, I settled on the Vargul Blighthound in Zul’Drak. It’s not very common to see on my server and that’s usually a requirement for me as well. I really don’t like to have the same thing everyone else seems to have.

Since I’ve made the switch to the Wolf (that I not-so-cleverly named “Woof”) I’ve seen a nice rise in my DPS when I’m in Heroics and Raids. I’m pretty satisfied with the new pet so far.

Very nice! Congrats on the spiffy wolf. If I may inquire, as I have just started up a Dranai Hunter on the Burning Crusade server, what pets would you recommend for a 10-19 PVP non-twinked build? The server is a PVP one, but I’m more interested in building to play in battlegrounds.

Honestly, I would avoid the Level 19 PvP tier if you aren’t going to go full-out twink for it. Otherwise, you’re just going to get super ganked left and right by over geared rogues. It’s a nightmare.

But if you’re looking for a PvP pet, at that level, you might want to go with a Cat or a Boar. I’m not really sure so here’s a link that might help: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22372460-19-Hunter-Twink-advice-wanted

I was really happy when they did the big pet overhaul, giving them all special abilities of their own, making more pets tamable, automatic skill-ups, etc. But one beef that I have, and I know is probably hard for them to balance is that still one pet family seems to be the “way to go”. For now, it’s the Wolf.

I’m not a disposable pet person. My hunter friend is, he’ll trade out his pets in a heartbeat for whichever theory-crafted pet will increase his total DPS.

While I understand the difficulty in the pet balancing while maintaining their diverse abilities, I feel a bit sad when I feel pressured to tame a wolf pet because it’s best for DPS. I like my wasp, but his special ability isn’t that great since it doesn’t stack with rogues. And a bear in a raid? He just dosen’t put out the damage. As MM though, fortunately my pet choice isn’t all that important.
